Angela Velez grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, under the watchful eye of her Peruvian immigrant parents. She earned her bachelor of arts from Columbia University and her master of fine arts from the University of Pittsburgh, where she was a K. Leroy Irvis Fellow. She teaches creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and lives in Durham, with her piles of books, three plastic flamingos, and one wobbly disco ball. Angela Velez grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, under the watchful eye of her Peruvian immigrant parents. She earned her BA from Columbia University and her MFA from the University of Pittsburgh. She lives in Durham, North Carolina and teaches creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Angela Velez grew up in Baltimore, under the watchful eye of her Peruvian immigrant parents. She received her B.A. in English and Hispanic Studies from Columbia University. After graduating, she became an undergraduate admissions officer at Columbia University, which gave her the chance to visit dozens of high schools across the country and meet with incredible students. 

Following her time at Columbia University, Angela went on to work in children’s publishing and digital media. In 2019, she completed her MFA in Fiction from the University of Pittsburgh, where she was a K. Leroy Irvis Fellow. She spent her summers as a graduate intern at Longform Podcast, National Public Radio, and the National Book Foundation. After graduation, Angela became an academic advisor at the University of Pittsburgh, helping hundreds of undergraduate students set and achieve their academic and professional goals.

Angela is a member of Las Musas, a marketing collective for Latinx women and marginalized people whose gender identity aligns with femininity. She received the 2019 Peter Taylor Fellowship from The Kenyon Review and she was a 2019 ProjectArt Artist in Residence. Her work has appeared in The Billfold, Electric Literature, Brit + Co, and Aster(ix) Journal. 

In addition to writing, Angela teaches undergraduate creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, leads creative arts workshops, and collects new hobbies (most recently: roller skating and sewing). She lives in Pittsburgh, with her piles of books, three plastic flamingos, and one wobbly disco ball. Lulu and Milagro’s Search for Clarity is her first novel.
